The Hot Wheels P-917 is based upon the Porsche 917, a prototype race car that has a spaceframe chassis and a compact light-weight design. It was a 1976 release that was designed by Ira Gilford and produced in Hong Kong.

The die-cast car can be found in orange or red enamel, with red being more rare. It has blue tinted windows, a black interior, and an opening rear hatch that reveals the engine. The base is black plastic and the redline wheels are through-hole.

Red, yellow, and purple stripes and graphics decorate the car. “9” is on the nose and “P-917” or “Porsche” is along each side of the top.

This is the fourth release of the car and it has a couple of changes from the 1974 Porsche 917. Besides the name change, the base is black plastic instead of metal and the printed graphics on the body can have “P-917” or “Porsche”.
