Porsche 917

The Hot Wheels Porsche 917 is based upon the prototype race car that was designed to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It features a 4.5 liter air-cooled flat-12 engine, a spaceframe chassis, and a compact light-weight design. Although fast, the original version suffered from poor handling and significant lift until a modification to the tail created enough downforce to stabilize the vehicle.

The die-cast car was a 1970 release that was designed by Ira Gilford. It is available in grey enamel as well as a variety of Spectraflame colors. The hatch opens to reveal a detailed engine, the rear end is painted black with red taillights, and the redline wheels are capped.

Production was in the U.S. and Hong Kong. A U.S. car has clear windows, a white interior, and “U.S.A.” on the base. A Hong Kong car has blue tinted windows, a black or brown interior, and “Hong Kong” on the base.

Porsche 917 is part of the Grand Prix series. Included with the vehicle was a collector’s button that can be plastic or metal with a smooth tab. Both buttons have a grey Porsche 917 on a blue background. Also included was a sticker sheet that has “18”, “Porsche”, and black stripes.
