The Hot Wheels Volkswagen is based upon a Volkswagen Beetle with a cutout hood that makes room for a large engine. It was a 1974 release that was designed by Ira Gilford and produced in Hong Kong.

The die-cast vehicle is orange enamel detailed with two possible designs. Early releases have black, white, and yellow stripes and graphics along the top. Later cars have a black, yellow, and green bug graphic on the roof.

It has blue tinted windows, a black interior, and a metal base. The redline wheels are through-hole.

The car is a reissue of the Custom Volkswagen from 1968 with several changes. The sunroof has been removed and rounded protectors were added to the base next to the wheels. The reissue also has enamel instead of Spectraflame paint and is decorated with printed graphics.
