Volkswagen Beach Bomb

The Hot Wheels Volkswagen Beach Bomb is based upon the Volkswagen Type 2 that is more commonly known as the VW Bus. The iconic minibus features a rear engine, rear wheel drive, and a flat vertical front.

The die-cast vehicle was a 1969 release that was designed by Ira Gilford. Production was in Hong Kong.

It is available in quite a few Spectraflame colors and the interior can be white or brown. Two removable surfboards are held in pods on the sides of the bus. The windows and large sunroof are tinted blue and the wheels can be bearing or capped.

Included with the vehicle was a collector’s button with a smooth tab. The button can have a green Beach Bomb on a blue background or a pink Beach Bomb on a yellow background. The green Beach Bomb has the surfboards sticking out the back and the pink one has the surfboards on the side.

Also included was a decal sheet that featured flowers. The decal sheet was also used with the Sand Crab.

An early version of the Volkswagen Beach Bomb with rear-loading surfboards was manufactured in very limited numbers. The original bus lacked the surfboard side pods and had a smaller sunroof.

Reproductions of the surfboards and the “Rear-Loading” Beach Bomb have been produced.
